A simple room-by-room guide to choosing the right paint finish. Stop guessing and get it right the first time.

Why Paint Finish Matters

Most homeowners pick a colour and forget about finish. But the finish affects how your paint looks, how long it lasts, and how easy it is to clean. Get it wrong and you will be repainting sooner than you planned.

The Five Finishes Explained

Matt (Flat)

No sheen at all. Matt paint absorbs light, which hides wall imperfections beautifully. The downside: it is harder to clean and marks can be difficult to wipe off without leaving a patch. Best for low-traffic areas where walls look their best.

Best for: Bedrooms, ceilings, study rooms.

Eggshell

A very slight, soft sheen — like the surface of an eggshell. Much more durable than matt and significantly easier to clean. This is the most popular finish for Singapore living rooms and is Benjamin Moore's signature finish in their Aura range.

Best for: Living rooms, dining rooms, hallways.

Satin

A smooth, silky sheen. Very washable and durable — you can wipe down satin walls without worrying about removing the finish. Great for homes with children or pets. Shows brush marks more than matt or eggshell, so surface preparation matters more.

Best for: Kitchens, kids' bedrooms, high-traffic corridors.

Semi-Gloss

A noticeably reflective finish. Excellent moisture resistance makes it ideal for wet areas. Very easy to clean. The reflective quality means any wall imperfections will be visible, so walls need to be smooth and well-prepared.

Best for: Bathrooms, toilet walls, doors, window frames, trims.

Gloss

High shine, mirror-like finish. Extremely durable and washable. Rarely used on full walls but excellent for feature walls, furniture, doors and metalwork. Shows every imperfection, so surface prep is critical.

Best for: Feature walls, furniture, exterior metalwork, doors.

Singapore-Specific Tips

  • Singapore's humidity means bathrooms and kitchens need at minimum Semi-Gloss — moisture will destroy Matt paint in wet areas within months
  • For air-conditioned rooms, condensation on walls can affect paint — Eggshell or Satin handles this better than Matt
  • Dark colours in Gloss or Semi-Gloss show dust and fingerprints more prominently in Singapore's climate
